  • Name Mary BOWATER  [2, 3
    Born INT 12 Feb 1690 (ye 2nd day of ye 12th mo. 1689*)  [4, 5, 6
    • * Note that the date of birth in the Quaker Meeting Minutes is the JULIAN date (as opposed to the "Gregorian" dates we use today). Quakers also referred to the months as numbered months rather than their names, and their calendar started on March 24th rather than January 1st. It gets even more complicated, so a date converter must be used to determine the Gregorian date ("INT" means "interpreted".) The Gregorian date appears first, followed by the Julian date in parenthesis.

    Notes
    • There is contention as to whether the wife of James Wright Sr. is Mary Bowater or Mary Davis. A Fellow of American Society of Genealogists (FASG), Stewart Baldwin, wrote two articles in The American Genealogist ("Quaker Marriage Certificates, Using Witness Lists in Genealogical Research," v72 (1997): p225-43 and "John and Thomas Bowater and their Sister Mary (Bowater) Wright," v75 (2000): p37–46, and p117–23) making the case that Mary Bowater was James Wright's wife. However, there has since been some disagreement with that theory by Margaret Ballinger, a researcher who descends from James and Mary Wright as she believes that James' wife is Mary Davis. Her argument is on the FindAGrave website (memorials #101049646 and #116561689 by "Bobs your Uncle"). Both sides have credence against each other, but neither one can prove solidly which Mary is the wife of James. I tend to lean toward the Mary Bowater theory since the man who researched this out is a FASG; he should certainly know his stuff. And the woman who believes it is Mary Davis does have some flaws in her theory, but some good points as well. So until I can find better proof (a marriage record or some other solid proof) then I am listing her as both surnames for now. Which poses a problem as she is now a brick wall in the family tree until we know which family surname she has.
