    Obituary 23 May 1895  [2
    • Died,

At his home on Spring Creek, Phelps county, Mo., May 15th, 1895, at 11:15 in the forenoon, Bro. Enoch Solomon Mathis, aged 71 years, 4 months, and 14 days.

Bro. Mathis was a son of Thomas and Annie (Davis) Mathis and was born near Wilksboro, Wilks county, N.C., January 1, 1842 [sic - should be 1824] and was of a family of 10 children, two of whom survive him, namely Thomas Mathis, who resides in Dallas county, Mo., and Miss Rosanna Mathis, who for many years has lived in the family with her brother E.T.[sic - should be E.S.] Mathis, whose death we now record.

In 1848 Bro. Mathis came to Missouri with his brother, James J. Mathis, who died December 2, 1884, and in 1850 he went back to North Carolina, where he in 1851 embraced the Christian religion and joined the Shady Grove Baptist church in Wilks county, N.C., and in 1853, he returned to Phelps county, Mo., and in 1855 he went to Dallas County, Mo., where on March 30, 1856, he was united in marriage with Miss Charlotte Wayman, who died October 29th 1893, aged 58 years, 5 months, and 29 days. They had a family of nine children, seven of whom survive him and live in Spring Creek township. About 1870 he moved back to Phelps county and bought the farm where he resided at the time of his death honored and respected by all. When he left North Carolina he was very careful to get a letter from the old Shady Grove Baptist church and united with the church in Missouri, and at the time of his death he was a faithful member of the Baptist church at Pleasant Grove, Phelps county.

Bro. Mathis was an uncle of Thomas Mathis, whose death we published last week. His remains were taken to the Smith cemetery, where religious services were held by the writer, assisted by Rev. A. Hendrix, May 16, 1895, and placed at rest at 3 P.M.

May God bless the children thus deprived of a loving father, and the thirteen grandchildren whom he loved so dearly, and the surviving brother and sister and the large circle of relatives and friends in our prayer.

      -- J.J. Watts

A funeral sermon was preached at the Mathis School house from Rev. 21:25 by myself assisted by Rev. A. Hendrix, in connection with his wife, July 28th 1895 at 11 a.m., Sunday. A very large congregation was present. All the children were present. J.F. Mathis gave me $1 and James H. Mathis gave $1 June 8th 1895.

    Notes
    • When Enoch returned to Missouri the last time, he brought his saddle bags full of white corn for seed. That corn has been grown in the family for over 100 years. It makes very good corn meal and homeny. [7]
