    • Obituary

Died, at his home in Spring Creek township, Phelps county, Mo., Dec. 2nd, 1884., Bro James J. Mathis, aged 70 years, 7 months and 15 days.

Bro. Mathis has for a long time been very feeble, although able to walk about his farm up to Wednesday, Nov. 26th. About sunset he went to his barn to do his usual choring, and remaining an unusual time, his affectionate wife sought for, and found him lying between the cribs where he had received a severe paralytic stoke, whereby his left side was wholly paralyzed and from the effect of which he died as above stated, expressing himself wholly resigned to the will of him who doeth all things well.

Bro. Mathis was born in Rockingham Co., N.C., April 17th, 1814, and the age of 18 months moved with his parents to Wilks Co., N.C., 10 miles from Wilksborough, where he was raised. In 1844 he came to Phelps county Mo., and three years after (in the fall of 1847) he returned to N.C., and married Miss Nancy Felts, March 16, 1848, who survives him. Two weeks after their marriage they started and came over land to Phelps Co., Mo., where they have ever since made their home.

Bro. Mathis experienced the christian religion several years ago and joined the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, and by daily walk and Godly conversations has demonstrated the fact that God hath power on earth to save.

Bro. and sister Mathis have had ten children, seven of whom survive him, and 29 grand-children living. He was of a family of ten children 5 of whom survive him. He was buried on the 4th inst. in the family vaults at the Smith Cemetery, amid the lamentations of a large concourse of relatives and friends. Religious services by the writer.
