    • Wm Lawhorn Dies Suddenly at Ashley

Coroner Dr. S.P. Schroeder was called to Ashley Tuesday to hold an inquest, William Lawhorn, aged 72, having passed away suddenly. The following served as jury: N.C. Barrett, forman, J.J. Ferguson, Irving Smith, Harvey Duffy, G. Morgan and hade McCoy. Ther verdict was that death was caused by heart disease. A.T. Brunson of Anchor, Ill., a son-in-law of deceased, who was visiting at the Lawhorn home, testified that Mr. Lawhorn retired Monday night seemingly well at 8:15 o'clock but that twenty minutes later Mrs. Lawhorn sensed something was wrong and spoke to her husband, but received no reply. When Mr. Brunson brought a light they saw that the aged man was dying. A few minutes afterward he expired. Mrs. Lawhorn stated that he had for some time been complaining of stomach trouble, but she anticipated nothing serious. Deceased left his wife and several children.

    Notes
    • There have been many stories in the Lawhorn family that William J. Lawhorn was of American Indian descent, and that he came from Oklahoma. I have found absolutely no evidence to support this story. All evidence points to the fact that William J. Lawhorn was born, raised, was in the Civil War, and married all in MISSOURI -- NOT Oklahoma. Here's the proof:

      1) Age 3: He's listed in the household of Jacob Lawhorn on the 1850 census for Benton Township in Greene County, Missouri (see fact #13 below)
      2) Age 13: He's listed in the same household on the 1860 census for Finley Township in Webster County, Missouri
      3) Age 16: He was enlisted in the 8th Regiment Missouri State Militia Cavalry Volunteers, Company H as a Private on 17 July 1863 in Webster County, Missouri (his brothers Daniel and James King Lawhorn were also in this regiment).
      4) Age 16: He was mustered out from Company H and into Company M on 28 Aug 1863 in Marshfield, Missouri
      5) Age 18: He was temporarily assigned to the 8th Regiment Missouri State Militia Cavalry Volunteers, Company K on 13 April 1865
      6) Age 23: On 19 Jun 1870, William J. married Mary Vienna Goddard in Newton County, Missouri according to "Marriage Records of Newton County, Missouri", on microfiche at Family history Library
      7) Age 23: He's listed on the 1870 census for Granby Twp, Newton County, Missouri (along with a "Mary V. Goddard", his WIFE)
      8) Age 33: He's listed on the 1880 census for Richview, Washington County, Illinois
      9) Age 53: He's listed on the 1900 census for Bald Hill Township, Jefferson County, Illinois
      10) Age 63: He's listed on the 1910 census for Casner Township, Jefferson County, Illinois
      11) Age 73: He's listed on the 1920 census for Ashley, Washington County, Illinois
      12) He died 3 days after the 1920 census was taken, in Ashley, Illinois
      13) His death certificate states he was born in "Green Co. MO" (this proves 1850 census is correct for this William J. Lawhorn)
      14) On 23 July 1920, his widow, Mary V. Lawhorn, filed for pension benefits in Illinois. It states William was in the "H 8 Mo. S. M. Cav." This proves #3 above is our William.
      15) Mrs. Essie Jones (William's daughter) provided the information for William's death certificate stating that his place of birth as "Green Co. MO", NOT Oklahoma.
